Congratulations to Carolyn Craig as the first entry drawn for supplying us with her correct contact details. The photo shows a very happy Carolyn collecting her new driver worth £200.00. As it was also her birthday at the time of this picture I believe her lunch immediately prior to this photo shoot could have added to her sense of overall contentment. |

Also to Pat Jenks who won a Free lesson for being the first to correctly state the location and name of the headland on the front page of the last newsletter. The headland in question was Pentire Head and the island visible approximately 1 mile off shore was Newland. Many of you will be familiar with this area providing one of the most spectacular walks in the country. We either park at New Polzeath and set off to Pentire point and around to The Rumps and Port Quin bay or if we are felling a little less ambitious we will drive to the farm at Pentire Glaze and reach The Rumps by crossing a couple of fields. The Rumps, see picture below, in an ancient Iron Age fortification and juts out into the sea with The Mouls, a small island, just a few hundred yards away. |

The views from Pentire back to Polzeath and the Camel Estuary which leads up to Daymer bay and Padstow are inspiring whether it is a beautiful day or if a storm is lashing the sea into a frenzy. Although when we lived in Cornwall we resided on the South coast we spent many, many happy days at Polzeath. It is surely one of the finest beaches with acres of sand and rollers offering some of the best surfing in Cornwall. When the tide is out it leaves lots of pools around the edges of the beach, allowing younger children to play safely and the expanse of rocks at low tide reveals thousands of rock pools with all manner of creatures trapped until the returning tide. My father was evacuated to New Polzeath from Surbiton during the war. I think that he felt extremely fortunate to be sent to area which offered untold opportunities for a young boy to explore and his love of Cornwall was nurtured from this point forward culminating in our return to Cornwall, as a family, in 1962 from California. |
